"800 thread count!" "1000 thread count!" The numbers keep climbing — but does a bigger number actually mean better sheets? The honest answer might surprise you.
What is thread count?
Thread count is the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric — counting both horizontal (weft) and vertical (warp) threads. So a 500-thread-count sheet has 500 threads packed into every square inch.
Does higher thread count mean better quality?
The biggest myth in bedding: beyond a certain point, manufacturers inflate the number by twisting multiple thin, low-quality threads together (called "plied" yarns) and counting each one. The result is a high number on the label — but a sheet that feels heavier, less breathable, and not actually better.
A well-made 400–600 thread count sheet from quality fibers will almost always outperform a "1000+" sheet made from cheap, plied threads.
The ideal thread count range
| Thread Count | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Below 200 | Coarse, low quality |
| 200–400 | Good everyday quality |
| 400–600 | The luxury sweet spot — soft, breathable, durable |
| 600–800 | Very soft, denser, warmer |
| 800+ | Often inflated — check the fiber first |
This is why our cotton pieces are woven at a 500-thread-count — the proven sweet spot for softness and breathability, without the inflated-number gimmicks.
What matters more than thread count
Fiber quality, weave, and finishing make the real difference. A fine jacquard weave, for example, creates texture and richness that no thread-count number can capture — see it for yourself below.

What is a good thread count for sheets?
For most luxury bedding, 400–600 is the ideal range. Higher isn't automatically better.
Is 1000 thread count better than 500?
Usually not. Counts above 800 are often achieved by inflating the number with low-quality plied threads. A genuine 500 from quality fiber typically feels better.
Does thread count matter for silk?
Silk is measured in momme, not thread count. For silk, look at momme weight and the silk grade (such as Grade 6A) instead — learn more in our Mulberry silk guide.
